A
Abroutissement:
Dégâts sur les plantations liés à la consommation des pousses d'arbres par le bétail ou le gibier.Browsing: Damage to the plantations linked with the nibbling of the tree shoots by cattle or wildlife.
Accompagnement (ou bourrage)
Végétation ligneuse introduite ou laissée autour d"une tige avec l’objectif de gainer celle-ci.N’ayant pas de but propre de production, elle sera rabattue pour ne pas gêner le plant par la suite.Accompaniment (or stuffing): Ligneous vegetation introduced or left around a stem in order to cover it. Having no special aim at producing, it will be cut down not to thwart the plant afterwards.
Accroissement
Augmentation des dimensions et du volume des arbres. En particulier accroissement annuel du volume par hectare, qui s’exprime en m3/ha/an.Accroissement courant en volume : Différence de volume entre deux années successives.
Accroissement moyen du volume : Moyenne réalisée sur plusieurs années.
Increase: Increase of tree sizes and volume. In particular annual increase of the volume per hectare, expressed in m3/ha/ per year.
Current increase in volume: difference of the volume between two successive years.
Average increase: average achieved over several years.

Accrus naturels
Peuplement forestier obtenu par la colonisation naturelle d'un terrain dont l'utilisation précédente a été abandonnée (déprise des terres agricoles).Natural increases: A forest planting obtained by the natural colonization of a ground whose former use has been abandoned (depreciation of agricultural grounds).
Affranchi
Se dit d’un rejet de taillis ou d’un drageon qui, en grossissant, s’est suffisamment enraciné pour prendre son indépendance vis-à-vis de la souche-mère.Emancipated :It is said of a shoot or a sprout which, by becoming bigger, has taken root deeply enough to free itself from the mother stump.
Agroforesterie
Système de production qui associe sur une même parcelle la culture des arbres et l’élevage ou une autre culture.Agroforestery: A system of production, combing on the same land, tree exploitation and cattle breeding or other activity.
Amélioration (coupe d’)
Toute coupe qui ne vise pas à la régénération, mais seulement à la meilleure venue et à la croissance des peuplements par élimination des arbres de moindre valeur.Improvement: (cutting of..) : Any cut which is not aimed at regeneration, but to encourage better growth of remaining trees by eliminating those of lesser value.
Aménagement forestier
Définition d’objectifs assignés à une forêt en tenant compte des contraintes techniques, économiques, réglementaires, sociales et environnementales, ainsi que l’organisation dans le temps et dans l’espace des moyens (coupes, travaux, financements) à mettre en œuvre pour atteindre lesdits objectifs. Le terme est habituellement réservé aux forêts gérées par l’Office National des Forêts.Forest development: Definition of goals set to a forest while taking into consideration technical, economical,legal, social and environmental constraints, as well as the organization in time and space of means (cuts, works, financing) to implement in order to reach the said goals. The word is usually reserved for the forests managed by the National Forest Office.
Amendement
Substance améliorant les propriétés physiques et/ou biologiques d'un sol (ex. : épandage de chaux sur un sol acide).Amendment: A substance improving the physical and/or biological proprieties of the soil (e.g.: adding lime to an acid soil).
Andainage
Rangement en cordons, généralement parallèles (andains), des souches et déchets de coupe, avant un reboisement.Swath lining: Putting away in swathes, generally in a parallel way, (swathes), of the stumps and wastes after cutting and before reforestation.
Arbre d'avenir (ou arbre objectif)
Arbre bien conformé (bonne rectitude, faible branchaison, …) au profit duquel sont réalisées les interventions sylvicoles (tailles, élagages en hauteur, coupes d'amélioration). Il s'agit d'un arbre destiné à grossir jusqu'au terme d'exploitation que le propriétaire aura choisi (âge, diamètre ou qualité).Tree of the future (or goal tree): A conformed tree (good straightness, weak branches,…) to whose benefit the forest interventions are intended (clipping, high pruning, improvement cutting). This is a tree intended to increase in size until reaching the chosen criteria (age, diameter, quality etc.).
Arbre de place
Arbre de qualité répondant à une recherche de répartition homogène de ces tiges sur la totalité de leur surface et devant constituer le peuplement final.Standing tree: A quality tree meeting a homogeneous distribution research of its stems over their whole space and having to constitute the final planting.
Assiette
Manière dont l’emplacement des coupes est défini.Plate: A way by which the place of cutting is specified.
Aubier
Couche périphérique vivante du bois dont les vaisseaux ne sont pas obstrués et dont le bois est souvent moins coloré et moins durable que le bois de cœur.Aubier The layer of the tree directly beneath the bark where the vessels are not obstructed and where the wood is usually lighter in colour and softer than the heart wood.
